OSLO, Norway: Norwegian police said this week they were investigating an explosion in central Oslo, where a second device was later found and safely detonated. A suspect has been taken into custody for questioning.
No injuries were reported at the site, which is located near a university campus and about 500 metres from the royal palace and the Israeli embassy. In a rare move, authorities issued an emergency text alert to residents warning them of the blast.
The second device appeared to be a "military-style" hand grenade, police officer Brian Skotnes told reporters. He confirmed that one suspect had been apprehended, while officers continued to pursue additional leads. "Our working theory is that this involves criminals targeting other criminals, but we cannot rule out other possibilities," he said. The area has since been declared safe.
Norwegian media, including TV2 and Aftenposten, reported, citing unnamed sources, that the suspect is a 13-year-old. Skotnes declined to comment on the individual's age.
The incident followed reports of drone sightings near the airports of Oslo and Copenhagen the previous day.
