The Los Angeles Angels placed infielders Vaughn Grissom and Adam Frazier on the injured list on Monday, which paved the way for first baseman Trey Mancini to return to the big leagues for the first time since 2023.
With Grissom (left oblique strain) and Frazier (right elbow inflammation) moving to the 10-day IL, the Angels purchased Mancini from Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled infielder Denzer Guzman. They also shifted third baseman Yoan Moncada to the 60-day IL to make room for Mancini on the 40-man roster.
Mancini, 34, is slated to play in his first major league game since July 31, 2023, with the Chicago Cubs. He will play first base and bat seventh for Los Angeles against the Houston Astros, one of his former teams.
In 831 MLB games, Mancini has posted a .263 batting average with 129 homers and 400 RBIs for the Baltimore Orioles (2016-22), Astros (2022) and Cubs (2023). He missed the 2020 season while defeating Stage 3 colon cancer.
Mancini posted a .273/.377/.464 slash line in 52 games for Salt Lake this season. He posted 23 extra-base hits -- 17 doubles and six homers -- in 224 plate appearances.
Grissom has appeared in 40 games for the Angels this season and fashioned a .246/.325/.410 slash line with four homers and 27 RBIs. Frazier also has appeared in 40 games for the Angels and batted .210 with one homer in 93 plate appearances.
Guzman, a 22-year-old shortstop, made his MLB debut last year with the Angels and notched a .566 OPS in 13 games. He cracked two home runs in 43 plate appearances. This season with Salt Lake, Guzman has smacked 12 homers and stolen nine bases while producing a .336/.403/.571 slash line and 57 RBIs in 58 games.
