The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-handers Jake Cousins and Jandel Gustave on the 10-day injured list on Saturday due to a COVID-19 outbreak that also includes right-hander Hunter Strickland.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell told reporters prior to Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves that Cousins and Strickland tested positive for COVID-19 and that Gustave was deemed a close contest.
Strickland is slated to be placed on the injured list Sunday. The team was unable to place him on the list Saturday due to a roster technicality.
Counsell said Strickland and Cousins will quarantine for 10 days and Gustave will do so for seven.
The Brewers are now without five players due to the outbreak that saw outfielder Christian Yelich test positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week and infielder Jace Peterson also placed in quarantine due to contact tracing.
"COVID is still around us, so we have to understand that," Counsell said. "Everybody's doing their best, but obviously, like we've talked about before, it's challenging."
Counsell said that Cousins and Strickland are both vaccinated but were tested after reporting symptoms.
Cousins is 1-0 in 13 appearances and hasn't allowed a run in 14 1/3 innings. Gustave (1-0) hasn't allowed a run in seven innings over six appearances, while Strickland is 0-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 15 appearances.
The Brewers activated right-hander John Curtiss and left-hander Daniel Norris to the active roster prior to Saturday's game. Curtiss was acquired from the Miami Marlins and Norris from the Detroit Tigers prior to Friday's trade deadline.
